I just came back from the #NeverAgain Rally, and I spoke briefly with some of the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. These are bright, passionate, well-spoken young men and women who, I hope, have launched a new movement that will finally bring change.
Let me say that I believe in the Second Amendment, and I will defend the right of responsible gun owners to bear arms. But I also believe that we MUST adopt common sense gun safety reform. We need universal background checks, an effective ban on assault weapons, restrictions on high-capacity magazines, and increased mental health support.
Contrary to what some have been saying, these two positions CAN coexist. We can respect our Second Amendment rights AND reduce gun violence in this country.
My daughter Madeline is four years old, and she has yet to participate in a school shooting lockdown drill. Let’s follow the lead of the brave students I met today, so that my daughter’s generation never has to face a tragedy like the one these teenagers have experienced.
